Stop Burning Your Rubber: A Better Way to Handle Maplan Heat
If you’ve ever run a Maplan machine, you know the nightmare of a sudden line stop. The machine freezes, but the heat doesn’t. It just keeps soaking into the mold. Before you even realize what’s happened, your rubber is scorched. It’s a waste of material, a waste of time, and frankly, a headache you don’t need. The problem is that most heating elements are just too “heavy.” They hold onto heat long after you flip the switch. That’s where our short-wave IR lamps come in. Instead of a bulky heater that lingers, these lamps use a low-mass quartz envelope and a high-density filament. In plain English? They heat up in seconds and—more importantly—they stop heating the instant the power cuts. It’s like the difference between a heavy cast-iron skillet and a flash of light. When your sensors pick up a stop, the radiation just… stops. No lingering heat. No burnt parts. Just a clean pause. Getting them installed is the easy part. We also use high-purity quartz, which means the lamps can handle the stress of rapid cycling without burning out. But, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind. Because these lamps hit the mold surface with so much intensity, your cooling channels have to be up to the task. If your cooling system is a bit sluggish, that rapid heat flux can actually warp your mold housing over time. It’s worth double-checking your coolant flow before you go full throttle. Also, you’ll probably want to tweak your PID tuning. Since the lamps react so much faster than what you’re used to, you might see some temperature overshoot if your control loops are too loose. Tighten those up, and you’re golden.
