Getting Your Comerio Ercole Up to Temp—Fast
If you’ve spent any time running a Comerio Ercole, you know the pain of the “cold start.” That lag between flipping the switch and actually hitting full power is a total bottleneck. It kills your rhythm and wastes precious cycle time. That’s exactly why we built our IR bulbs the way we did. We wanted to kill that lag. The goal is simple: get that PET preform to its glass transition temperature the moment it hits the zone, no waiting around. How it actually works We went with short-wave infrared. Here is the thing: unlike those long-wave heaters that just push hot air around, these bulbs shoot radiation straight into the plastic. Inside, we’ve got high-wattage halogen filaments wrapped in high-purity quartz. It creates a massive amount of energy in a small space. And because of the halogen cycle, the filament doesn’t just evaporate and disappear when you crank the voltage. It stays stable. It stays hot. Fitting them in You don’t need to rewire your whole shop to use these. They’re designed as drop-in replacements. We use standard R7s or SK15 connectors, so they just slide right into your existing sockets. We also spent a lot of time tuning the length and voltage to fit the Ercole’s oven footprint perfectly. No more annoying “cold spots” where the plastic just doesn’t heat evenly. Plus, the quartz is tough enough to handle the shock of being turned on and off rapidly without cracking. The “Catch” (and how to avoid it) Now, pushing this much heat isn’t free. When these bulbs are running full tilt, they put off a lot of ambient heat inside the housing. If your cooling fans are choked with dust or your airflow is blocked, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll either burn out the bulbs early or, worse, warp your reflectors. Speaking of reflectors—keep them clean. Seriously. Even a thin layer of dust can bounce 10-15% of that energy right back into the bulb. That’s a fast track to a dead heater. One last tip: make sure your power supply is steady. If your voltage flickers, your heat flickers. That leads to uneven walls in your PET, and nobody wants that.
