
How to Stop Your Glass from Snapping During CNC Cutting
If you’ve ever had a piece of glass shatter right in the middle of a CNC cut, you know that sinking feeling. Most of the time, it’s thermal shock. It happens when a hot cutting tool hits cold glass, creating a sudden spike in internal stress that just snaps the material. The fix? We put shortwave infrared (IR) preheating lamps right on the CNC gantry.
Getting the Heat Right, Right Now
The trick is getting the glass warm instantly. You can’t wait around for the air to heat up; you need a heat source that hits the target temperature in milliseconds. That’s why we use high-wattage shortwave quartz lamps. They don’t waste time heating the room—they dump energy directly into the glass surface. To make this work, we pair the lamps with a fast-switching SCR or a PWM controller. This lets you tweak the power on the fly. As the CNC head moves, the lamp ramps up and preheats the path just ahead of the cut. It smooths out the temperature jump, which is exactly what stops those annoying stress fractures from happening.
The Hardware Side of Things
We go for high power density here. By using shortwave emitters, we can get the heat to penetrate the glass quickly without turning the entire machine frame into an oven. But you have to play a balancing act with your line speed. If you crank up the speed of your CNC, you’re going to need more kilowatts per linear meter to keep that preheat zone consistent. Otherwise, you’re back to square one.
The Trade-offs (The Part Everyone Forgets)
Here’s the thing: these lamps put out a massive amount of heat. If you just slap a high-density array on there without any shielding, you’ll end up cooking your sensors and linear guides. It’s a mess. You really need a dedicated cooling system for the lamp housing. If the gantry gets too hot, it expands, and suddenly your precision cutting isn’t so precise anymore. One last tip: keep those quartz tubes spotless. A little bit of dust or a smudge of oil can create hotspots that’ll burn out your lamp way sooner than it should. Keep them clean, and they’ll last.
